Cedar Strip Canoe in Gum Marsh

TurtleThe Ogeechee River is the longest undammed river in Georgia. It starts above I-20 in Taliferro County and empties into the Atlantic Ocean below Richmond Hill. The Ogeechee River starts in and flows through the pedimont where it picks up clay sediment that causes the water's muddy color.

The most popular section of the Ogeechee is from the put-in at Scarboro to the take-out at Rocky Ford. The river varies from a narrow winding river that can have swift current to a straight fairly wide river in places. There are a lot of places where maneuvering around turns and strainers is required. The Ogeechee features a wide swampy flood plain with scattered large old cypress trees. Because of the wide flood plain, there is very little development along the Ogeechee making it a very scenic river. There are a good many sloughs which can be explored. This section is usually clear of brush and lift overs. However one year the water got so low that lift-overs were pretty frequent.

The sections above Midville get pretty brushy. The section from Millen to Scarboro is also an excellent paddle but it is much longer than the Scarboro to Rocky Ford section and requires more stamina.

See Winding River Technique for information on how to handle winding rivers such as the Ogeechee.
